Out of the night that covers me,
Black as a pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever Gods may be

고등학생때 잠깐 Jhon Milton의 『Paradise Lost』에 빠져있을때, 그와 관련된 책을 읽다가 우연히 알게되어 좋아했던 시. 이후 재수생활에 힘이 되었던 몇 가지 작품 중 하나. 『Paradise Lost』에 대해 알게된 계기는 『록맨X8』이다.
아무튼.
이 시를 처음 알게 되었던 이야기는 어떤 사형수가 - 이름은 기억나지 않는다 - 형장의 이슬로 맺히기 전에 크게 읊었다는 <I am the Master of my Fate. I am the Captain of my Soul.>의 원전을 찾으면서 였다. 비록 잘못된 신념이었지만 확고했던 그를 보며 난 무슨 생각을 했었나.
이날 난 옳다와 확신한다의 차이점에 대해 알게되었다. 분명하게 이해하진 못 했을지언정, 그 차이를 인정할 수 밖에 없었고 난 그것에 대해 알아야만 했다.
